Some of these plantings are in commercial plantations, however the bulk are beans grown by small-holders in a number of villages saddling the volcanic peaks. Our visit was to examine the drying and processing facilities for that mountain grown Bali Arabica.

As in the rest of the coffee world, the small-holders make up the bulk of the growers, but receive little real financial reward for their efforts. Our concern is always to look for a way in which to assist these small growers to improve their picking, drying and sorting processes in order for them to be able to market their coffee to the specialty coffee market outside of Indonesia. In most cases the growers are more than happy to listen to ideas on how to improve the finished quality of their product. In Bali the yields from the trees in raw cherries is very good. The spirit of Canada isn't so much that of the transplanted French or English - although these immigrant peoples have helped forge the contemporary Canadian identity. The spirit of Canada belongs to the native people who formed the earliest and most intimate relationship with the land when it was still untamed. If a country can be said to possess a soul, then the soul of this nation belongs to the First Nations.

I don't relate to the window dressing that governments and their agencies present to the world as a reflection of all things Canadian. I don't relate to the cultural games that attempt to finesse the elusive Canadian identity. I don't like official exertions in the area of culture that get in the way of spontaneity - be it "official" multiculturalism or self-conscious Canadian content, or cross-cultural meet and greet fests at Harborfront. That's the Canada I believe in, not in a manufactured facade that is supposed to make us all feel good about ourselves.

The measure of a nation's confidence in its culture and identity, is the extent to which it can absorb criticism and even ridicule. Some Canadians are very brittle on that score. HDMI or Component: Which is Best?

You've just bought a new HDTV, complete with HDMI connector and are delighted that Mary's Boy Child had the foresight to buy a DVD player with HDMI interface a while ago, even though you couldn't use HDMI at the time.

So you can ignore those component outputs and inputs and plug an HDMI cable between your two favourite bits of home theater kit. After all, HDMI, being all digital, is bound to be better than component, isn't it?

Well, no, actually. Not necessarily. It's true that convering a DVD signal to analog, sending it over component video and then switching it back to digital in the TV will result in a slight degradation of picture quality. And G.I. Joe true that HDMI drug interactions this issue. However, the degradation in the signal over component is virtually imperceptable and HDMI does introduce a few problems of its own.

Firstly, although DVD players "up-convert" video from 420p resolution to the native resolution of the HDTV (720p or 1080i), the signal still has to be "re-clocked" in the television before it is displayed. Some experts suggest that this re-clocking introduces more artefacts than the process of digital-to-analog-to-digital conversion. Here she comes again into the office to complain. First it was about everyone else abusing their breaks, and then she accused Star Trek of playing favorites In Search Of Bigfoot not honoring her seniority, now shes unhappy with the rotation. You think to yourself: what now?

Some complaints are valid and others are annoying. One of the biggest stresses on management is the squeaky wheel that never gets enough grease. If you have one of these noisy irritants you can transform Stan Kenton Thingmaker into a problem solver by asking these power questions:
Does everyone else feel the same?
What do you suggest?
Are you willing to write up a proposal with your ideas?

Suppose you are a supervisor in a manufacturing department and Connie Complainer comes to you with the grievance that the rotation is unfair. One way to document and keep track of complaints and suggestions is to ask the third power question: Are you willing to write up a proposal with your ideas? This is an excellent way to develop leadership in someone who otherwise might be contrary. How far is that person willing to go when asked to make a real commitment to helping solve the problem? Is she willing to put her ideas to paper or make an informal presentation? If so, then you have given her the opportunity to develop leadership skills and take ownership of the problem.

Be prompt in your follow up once your employee has written the proposal, otherwise it hurts your credibility and you risk losing trust. Strategic use of these questions puts you in the drivers seat and empowers your employees to being a part of the solution instead of part of the problem.

The New Perspective Game

This little debating game can change how you think about an issue. Once you effectively argue for anything, it's very easy to start believing some of what you say. It demonstrates how powerful your mind is. When it adopts a given perspective, it can usually make sense of it quickly and defend it easily. That makes this exercise a warning as well. It suggests we can convince ourselves of almost anything, so perhaps our current thinking isn't as rational as we like to think.

The Make-A-Joke Game

Trying to invent jokes can really get you thinking, and possibly laughing, but it can also be very frustrating. For this game, have someone choose any object in the room (or car, if you are driving). Players then try to come up with a joke or two about the object or involving it in some way. A reasonable time limit is perhaps five minutes. See who can create the Aluminum Christmas Trees joke in that time.

Trying to create something funny is more difficult than it might seem. It will really exercise your lateral thinking abilities above all. I just chose the calendar on my wall as my random object, to give an example. A few minutes later, this is all I could come up with:

Bob, my friend, was tired of winter, so he tore January out of the calendar and pasted July in its place. The next week I asked him how this was working out for him. He sighed and told me "I just can't get a break it seems. I mean, who would have thought it would snow on the threeth of July!" (My other one was about a guy who fell in love with the girl on the calendar because he could always get a date with her.)

Creating truly funny jokes is tough, but it will get you thinking, perhaps even more than the other games here. For an alternative you could start with ideas or issues instead of objects, or you could specify that players have to create a funny riddle. And by the way, if you learn a few humor "algorithms," this process gets easier.

I worked for 25 years as a Yellow Fantastic Four consultant along with almost 100 fellow sales people. During that time, I was in Scooby Leprosy Scrappy Doo top for most of my tenure, but I can’t say the same for many of my cohorts. I got to see the good, the bad, and the ugly in sales and advice. Most of these people were well-meaning, but many lacked an essential element. They we’re not client-oriented. Because of various demands that the publisher placed upon them, they were forced to push the latest and greatest Yellow Page product down the throats of the unsuspecting advertisers. This method of selling placed the interests of the client into a secondary position. So much for the true consultant.

I have since retired and even written a book about my experiences. But I keep in touch with several sales people. They complain about the same issues I always fought. Not enough time to spend with the investment person and too much time inputting data. It’s an industry-wide problem. Yet these people are the ones the average directory client sees each year to help develop and create their programs, both large and small. So, if these folk have been working as Yellow Page advisors for all these many years, can they be considered Yellow Page experts?

If longevity is a factor, anyone who has been selling for 20 years or more might be seen as an expert. But, is the on-the-job experience enough to qualify one as such? I know that’s a lot to ask from an expert, but that’s what separates the home-run hitter from the bench-warmer. Then ask for references and call former clients. Compare their rates and type of ads and programs they have built. Crying the management blues these days? Well, youre not alone. Companies inside and outside of our industry are trying non-traditional ideas to help cure Swamp Thing issues, specifically in the area of employee training. Most training problems, cant be solved at the level most believe. In fact, far too many companies try to solve issues from the bottom-up. They send their A-team to new units and their new managers to corporate universities to train them properly. I firmly believe the initial training of an employee is vital, but is third in line after hiring stars and ensuring the restaurants are run properly.

An article in Fast Company magazine profiled Home Depot's hiring of ex-junior military officers citing that these individuals were hired because they had real leadership experience, often under challenging circumstances. A study by Rainmaker Thinking and management guru Bruce Tulgan found that only 10 percent of managers (not specific to the QSR field) provide his 5 management basics including: clear statements of what's expected of each employee, explicit and measurable goals and deadlines, detailed evaluation of each person's work, clear feedback, and rewards fairly mete out.
